As generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) continues to make significant advances, chief legal officers are taking the lead in embracing the new technology, according to new research from ACC in partnership with Everlaw, the cloud-native litigation and investigation platform.

The report — Gen AI and Future Corporate Legal Work: How Ready Are In-house Teams? — found that CLOs tend to utilize AI more frequently than their colleagues, are among the most likely to report efficiency gains from its use, and report having the best understanding of how to leverage GenAI tools effectively in their work.

These results indicate that CLOs play a crucial role in driving GenAI adoption and understanding its potential benefits within legal departments. Nearly 60 percent of CLOs believe GenAI will have a significant impact on in-house legal teams, with 12 percent saying the effects will be “transformative.”

Help teams navigate challenges, opportunities

Mid-level attorneys report the greatest level of concern with GenAI. While they do not believe that GenAI will have as much impact as their colleagues do, they feel the least prepared for its impact on their careers, and they report the greatest level of concern about potential job displacement.

Organizations should provide adequate support and resources to help legal professionals navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by GenAI.

Senior attorneys are least optimistic about their department’s readiness to address talent-related issues resulting from GenAI adoption, and they are more likely to expect legal jobs to be affected by GenAI compared to other roles.

Organizations should prioritize talent management strategies to address these potential challenges through training, development, and retention initiatives. Legal departments should assess their readiness to handle the talent-related implications of further technological advancements.
