George Walls is assistant general counsel of Bank of America Corporation, and in that capacity has provided legal counsel in numerous mergers, acquisitions and divestitures ranging in value from $7 million to $61 billion throughout North America and various international jurisdictions.

In addition to his M&A specialty, Mr. Walls has an extensive background in banking and other financial services, and corporate governance and structure. Prior to his current position, he was general counsel and secretary of Suburban Bancorp, and corporate secretary and securities counsel for Sovran Financial Corporation.

A graduate of the University of Maryland School of Law, Mr. Walls is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar, the Association of Corporate Counsel, and the Society of Corporate Secretaries and Governance Professionals.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your career thus far?

Holding a variety of legal and corporate governance positions in different geographical locations has been rewarding.

What are some of the benefits of working for an international corporation?

Doing M&A transactions in a number of different countries has been interesting.

What ACC resources have been the most beneficial to you?

I have enjoyed the interaction and networking with other ACC members.

What is the most interesting aspect of working for Bank of America Corporation?

In my position with Bank of America Corporation, doing M&A transaction across all lines of business provides variety.

What are the biggest challenges in-house attorneys will face in the coming years?

The trend toward specialization and budget cuts are two items that may continue to present challenges, and both may create a need to reinvent one’s self often.
